The Math Swapping Game!

The Math Swapping Game!

What is Substitution?  🔄

Have you ever played a game where you swap a token for a prize? Or maybe you traded a blue marker for a red one? If you did, you were already practicing substitution!
In mathematics, substitution is just a fancy word for a simple swapping game. It means replacing one thing (like a shape or a letter) with another thing (like a number) to solve a puzzle.

🔍 1. It’s Just a Swap!

Imagine a secret code where a 🌟 star symbol always stands for the number 5.
If you see the puzzle:
$$🌟 + 🌟 = ?$$
You use substitution! You swap the stars for 5s.
$$5 + 5 = 10$$

The Key Rule:

When you make a substitution, you must swap every instance of that symbol or letter for its chosen value!

💡 2. Substitution in Algebra (Letters!)

When you get a little older (ages 9–11), you’ll stop using shapes and start using letters, like $x$, $y$, or $n$. These letters are called variables.

Let’s try it with the variable $n$:

Mystery: Find the answer for $3 + n$.
Clue: The variable $n = 4$.
Your Mission:
  1. Locate: Find the letter $n$.
  2. Swap: Use substitution to replace $n$ with 4.
  3. Solve: Now your puzzle looks like $3 + 4$.
  4. Result: $3 + 4 = 7$!

🧩 3. Substitution for Different Ages

🟢 For Ages 6–8: Value Tables

Younger mathematicians often use charts or value tables. You must look at the key first to know what to swap.
  • If a 🍎 apple = 2 and a 🍌 banana = 3.
  • What is 🍎 + 🍌? (Swap! 2 + 3 = 5)

🔵 For Ages 9–11: Substitution in Formulas

Older detectives use substitution to solve real-world problems using simple formulas.
  • Problem: Calculate the Area of a rectangle.
  • Formula: Area = Length $\times$ Width.
  • Clue: The Length = 5 cm and the Width = 3 cm.
  • Solve: Swap the words for numbers! Area = 5 $\times$ 3. The area is 15 square cm!

Quiz Questions:
  1. If $\triangle$ triangle = 8, what is $\triangle – 3$?
  2. If $x = 10$, what is $x + 15$?
  3. Look at this key: 🟢 = 2, 🔷 = 6. What is (🔷 + 🔷) – 🟢?
(Answers: 1. 5 [$8 – 3$], 2. 25 [$10 + 15$], 3. 10 [$(6 + 6) – 2$])
